How we met

Richard and Rebecca somehow found each other on a popular dating app that shall remain nameless. It was the doldrums of November 2016, and neither was feeling particularly enthused about the romantic options available to young professionals in this new millennium. However, one day, Richard received a very chipper early morning message from Rebecca with kind words about his beard. Richard assumed that the positive feedback was the work of a Russian troll farm since that was commonplace at the time. After weighing options, he responded, and the two had a pleasant conversation.

Within days Rebecca had aggressively added Richard to her Snapchat and began sending goofy videos including one of her annoyed brother Robbie trying to eat cereal while being peppered with odd questions. Rebecca also explained that the little girl in her dating app profile picture was actually her adorable niece Scarlet and not her daughter.

The two genuinely enjoyed each other’s virtual company, but Rebecca later admitted that she considered pawning Richard off to a friend when she found out he was a vegetarian. She eventually came to terms with his culinary habits and became determined to meet in person. On Nov. 19, Rebecca found herself at a house party in general proximity to Richard's Northeast D.C. residence. Via text message she explained that she was in the area and could easily drop in to meet in person.

Of course, Richard works basically every Saturday night scoring MMA fights, and this night was no exception. He was interested in meeting Rebecca in person and moving the budding relationship forward. However, he struggled to explain that not only was he sitting at home watching loosely regulated violence (technically it is a sport), but he also would be watching this sport until the late hours of the night. Could you imagine someone saying, “sorry, I can’t hangout, I will be counting the strikes in a semi-gladiatorial contest for the next six hours” and being serious? Even now, you have to admit it sounds fabricated at best.

Rebecca would not be deterred and resigned herself to wait. Richard’s fights eventually came to an end a little bit after 11pm. It was lightly snowing that night, and Rebecca was dressed for a tundra as she showed up at Richard's place wearing a full parka, a flannel shirt and Bean boots. The two somehow decided to watch Pleasantville but spent the whole night talking over the film. To this day, Richard is forever thankful that Rebecca took that chance and showed up that night.
